Resolving to Save

Resolutions

In just a few days, many of you will celebrate Christmas, and in the blink of an eye, 2015 will be a memory. We sincerely hope that you have had a wonderful year and that your holiday season is filled with peace, joy, and much fun!

As we turn the final page on this year’s calendar, we begin to think about how to make 2016 a better year. Whether you make resolutions to lead a healthier lifestyle, get your finances in order, or relax more, now is the time to start thinking about what resolutions you will make. We’d like to suggest a few resolutions to create energy savings in your home or business.

  • Investigate thoroughly. Study your utility bills to determine when you’re using the most energy. Request an energy audit from your electric company, or purchase a meter that will tell you which appliances are using more than their share of energy. Look for places in your home where heat is sneaking outdoors and caulk or repair as needed.
  • Invest in savings. Old appliances may be using more electricity than you think. Replacing with energy models saves in the long run. Likewise, an upgrade to windows and doors can reap great rewards. The type of light bulbs you use may seem like a minor detail in your home or business, but that is far from the truth. Much benefit comes from switching to energy efficient and long lasting bulbs. Contact us about how we can help your business make the change.
  • Pay attention to the little things. All those little things that charge, shine pinpoint lights, and emit heat are often referred to as energy vampires, and they may be even scarier than that mythical creature; they cost you hard earned cash. Unplug, unplug, unplug. Invest in smart power strips to help you minimize the energy they suck.
  • Make it automatic. Putting lights on timers or using motion sensors are great ways to remember to turn off items not in use. Set your computer to sleep, hibernate, or shut down after a certain time period of inactivity. A smart thermostat can help you save on your heating and cooling.
  • Make it a team effort! If just one person is making changes, you won’t see the same results. Plus, the team can hold each other accountable. Make a game of it. At home, have an energy saver jar and place a quarter in it every time the kids catch a light left on or another infraction. Have a pizza or movie night when it’s full. At your business, run a contest to see who can come up with the best energy-saving idea.

Let’s resolve to make 2016 a year that leads to saving energy and money!
