Does Your Home Need an Electrical Service Upgrade?

Electrical service upgrade

Homeowners would much rather spend their time and money on new flooring, gorgeous paint jobs, and luscious landscaping than on upgrading their electricity. Otherwise, there’d be a whole lot more electricians featured on HGTV, right? Though not as glamorous, an electrical service upgrade may serve to create the kind of home you need. In some cases, it’s a matter of safety. In fact, a needed upgrade could save you from experiencing great loss.

How do you know if you need an electrical service upgrade?

Seemingly small problems with electricity. There is no such thing as a small problem when it comes to electricity, but there are some things that people may get used to as opposed to addressing the issue. This includes flickering lights or breakers that frequently trip, or the need to unplug an appliance before plugging another one in order to prevent these problems.

Cries for help. If you don’t recognize the above small whimpers for help, your home may really cry out with melted electrical wires, burns, shocks, and overheating. If you experience these or observe rust around your panel, you need to call in a professional right away.

Aging components. If your house is more than 40 years old or if it still runs on 60 amp service, there’s a good chance you need an upgrade to handle increased loads. Other clues that you are need of an upgrade are non-grounded (two-pronged) outlets, non-GFCI outlets in the bathroom or kitchen, or too few outlets, requiring the need for extension cords. Additionally, some types of panels have components deemed unsafe and should definitely be replaced as soon as possible. Depending on your home and family’s specific needs, you may need as many as 200 amps.

Remodels and additions. If you’re remodeling or adding on to your home, consult a professional to ensure that your electrical needs are met. You may be required to upgrade your panel due to insurance guidelines or local building codes. Additions that use a great deal of power, such as a hot tub or new air conditioner, very often require an upgrade.

An upgrade of your panel and/or the wiring and outlets in your home may not be at the top of your wish list. However, keep in mind that by having it done, and done well, brings tremendous peace of mind regarding the safety of your family and your home. Further, this important maintenance preserves your home’s value, and in some cases actually increases it. If you plan ahead, you can save money by timing it right (such as during a remodel when walls are already open) and creating space for your home’s future electrical needs.
